Archbishop Makarios visits St. Basil’s Randwick

Within days after his arrival to Australia, Archbishop Makarios decided to stretch his legs, and get out of the office. He said with a warm smile, “instead of going to the café for a coffee, I thought I would come here and you could offer me coffee instead.” We all laughed as we received His Eminence with enthusiasm and a little disbelief.

Another reason for his visit was to meet one of our residents, Very Rev Fr Miltiades Chryssavgis. The Archbishop has worked closely with the son of Fr Miltiades, Rev. Deacon Dr John Chryssavgis.

Upon entering the facility His Eminence gravitated towards the serene chapel of St. Paisios where hymns and prayers were offered. He addressed the crowd of residents, families and visitors, speaking highly of the work of St. Basil’s.

A short tour followed where the residents were able to speak with and spend time with the Archbishop. His love was evident in his warmth, his smile, his humour and his generosity of time for the residents, one at a time.

Luckily we did not forget to take our coffee together before his Eminence left to return to his busy schedule.
